The exhibition The Lives of Animals (Muhka, 08 June – 22 September 2024) looks at the subject of animals from the perspective of the visual arts, asking the fundamental question about what an animal is and whether humans can be friends with animals. Participating artists critically examine the attitudes of ‘human exceptionalism’, stemming from the belief that animals do not understand the concept of death or have a sense of future. Can we, and under what circumstances, adopt an animal perspective?
De tentoonstelling Dierenleven onderzoekt het onderwerp dieren vanuit het perspectief van de beeldende kunst en stelt de fundamentele vraag wat een dier is en of mensen vriendschap kunnen sluiten met dieren. Deelnemende kunstenaars onderzoeken kritisch het idee van ‘menselijk exceptionalisme’, dat voortkomt uit de overtuiging dat dieren het concept van de dood niet begrijpen en geen gevoel voor de toekomst hebben.

De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar de fictokritische roman van J.M. Coetzee, The Lives of Animals. De tekst neemt de ongebruikelijke en polemische vorm aan van een filosofische dialoog, waarin twee lezingen — gegeven door de fictieve hoofdpersoon, literatuurwetenschapper Elisabeth Costello — verweven zijn met het verhalende plot. J.M. Coetzee presenteert verschillende standpunten over dieren. Vaak zijn dit extreem gepolariseerde perspectieven, wat de roman een uitzonderlijk hedendaags karakter geeft en de dynamiek van het publieke debat rond het onderwerp dieren treffend weerspiegelt. Het hoofdpersonage van de roman verkent de fundamenten van de menselijke moraal, waarbij hij verwijst naar de ethiek van mededogen en de ‘poëtische voorstelling’ (het vermogen om zich te verplaatsen in de situatie van anderen). De door Costello aangehaalde concepten van empathie en zachtmoedigheid vormen het uitgangspunt voor deze tentoonstelling, die vertrekt vanuit een interdisciplinaire benadering waarbij literatuur, filosofie, ethiek en beeldende kunst worden gecombineerd om conventionele opvattingen over dieren te onderzoeken en ter discussie te stellen. Simultaan worden bezoekers aangemoedigd om hun relatie met dieren op een andere manier te benaderen.
Anne Marie Maes is a Belgian artist and researcher. Her work includes organic sculptures, prototypes and documentation. Since 2008, she has been studying how honeybees function in relationship to the environment they live in. In an open-air laboratory on her roof in Brussels, she makes intelligent beehives where she analyses the behaviour of the bees without disturbing the colony. The Guerilla Beehive (2017–2019) is an example of an organic beehive of this kind that runs on solar energy. When the colony dies out or goes elsewhere, the hive turns into compost. With care for the future and a love of small lifeforms, Maes analyses the beauty, fragility and complexity of nature.
In BEE AGENCY (2008 – ongoing), Maes calls for us to see the honeybee as a free species again. The installation shows work from her open research and talks about the effects of domestication on bees. The pressure humans put on bees causes them stress and weakens their immune system, right at the time when invasive non-native species such as the Varroa mite and Asian hornet are threatening their existence. Bees are essential for the pollination of the fruit and vegetables that feed us. In BEE AGENCY, Maes advocates restoring the bees’ autonomy and cultivating a form of collaboration with these intelligent insects.
