L’exposition « Réalisme magique : imaginer la nature en dés/ordre » au WIELS et RendezVous – Brussels Art Week rythment le mois de septembre de la capitale belge. Après « Atopolis » (dans le cadre de Mons2015, capitale européenne de la Culture), « Le Musée absent » (2017) et « Risquons-Tout » (2020-2021), « Réalisme magique : imaginer la nature en dés/ordre » poursuit le cycle des ambitieuses expositions montées par le WIELS, à Bruxelles, au cours des dix dernières années.

On a small, princess-pink television on the fifth floor of the WIELS Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels, an animated bear smokes a blunt as a spectral voice recounts a run-in with the police that nearly devolved into violence. The film is Nigerian-American poet Precious Okoyomon’s ‘It’s dissociating season’ (2019), and the narrator is her brother.

Wiels in Brussel is en blijft een uitzonderlijke plaats waar het goed vertoeven is en waar de kunst tot denken aanzet. Dirk Snauwaert bewijst dat de Kunsthalle Wiels nog steeds de meest interessante en avontuurlijke plek blijft in ons (te) sterk bezaaid kunstenlandschap. Het maken van een groepstentoonstelling is andere koek dan solo na solo te organiseren, waar de druk vooral op de schouders blijft liggen van de individuele kunstenaar.

Het Brusselse museum Wiels pakt uit met een ambitieuze tentoonstelling. Magisch realisme biedt antwoorden op de noodkreet van de door kapitalisme, industrie en kolonisatie uitgeputte planeet. Een voltreffer. Dertig kunstenaars uit binnen- en buitenland begeven zich in het grensgebied tussen realistisch en magisch denken. Waar schuilen de oplossingen: in wetenschap, een terugkeer naar de wilde natuur, de verbeelding?

Na de groepstentoonstellingen Het afwezige museum (2017) en Risquons-Tout (2020-2021) presenteert Wiels een vervolg in de vorm van een ambitieuze, thematische zomertentoonstelling, die deels ook bij argos te zien is. De expo staat stil bij een actuele vraagstelling: hoe kunnen we de leefomgeving vormgeven in een tijd van planetaire verschuivingen en ecologische uitdagingen? Eenduidige antwoorden worden niet gegeven, omdat het thema al te meerduidig is aangepakt. Het weerklinkt in de ondertitel...

De band tussen mystiek, dromen, ecologie en onze omgeving staat centraal in de nieuwe expo in Wiels. Wetenschap en magie. Het lijken tegenpolen, maar in Wiels smelten ze samen. In de nieuwe expo 'Magisch Realisme' zoeken 30 kunstenaars naar nieuwe manieren om naar onze planeet te kijken en hoe we ermee omgaan. Wetenschap en harde feiten verbinden met magie en intuïtie, het is precies wat de Brusselse kunstenaar Anne Marie Maes al jaren doet. In haar installatie toont ze 'sensorische vellen' gemaakt door fermentatie. "Soms lijkt het alsof de bacteriën ons iets willen vertellen."

This outdoor work initiates the shift in attention from human narratives to the recentering of animal subjectivity that underpins Katerina Gregos’s expansive group exhibition. Featuring over two hundred works by more than sixty artists, “Why Look at Animals? A Case for the Rights of Non-Human Lives” has the scale and heft of a biennial and aligns with Gregos’s penchant for ambitious socio-political themes.

For a long time, animals were not considered a ‘serious’ subject in art. With rare exceptions – like British horse painting, for example – you usually see animals as accessories, never as subjects. There has always been a lot of prejudice, just as there still is in many other areas of the art world. You start seeing exhibitions about the environment, ecology, and climate change – but even then, when animals appear in art history or contemporary art, it's mostly about how artists see them.

In BEE AGENCY (2008 – ongoing), Maes calls for us to see the honeybee as a free species again. The installation shows work from her open research and talks about the effects of domestication on bees. The pressure humans put on bees causes them stress and weakens their immune system, right at the time when invasive non-native species such as the Varroa mite and Asian hornet are threatening their existence. - Nowdays the newspapers are filled with the climate change problem. Do you think that, in a thousand years, there will still be humans on earth? - I think humans are a strong animals (laugh). Big survivors. Better would be if there are less humans on Earth, it would be good to have a balance and restore Nature more or less. For sure, Nature will exist in 1000 years. When I started my rooftop garden on the rooftop of my studio in Brussels (where we discussing now), the first few meters were a terrace.

AnneMarie Maes is gefascineerd door bijen. Ze doet artistiek onderzoek naar slimme korven voor de ernstig bedreigde insectensoort. Wetenschap en Kunst moeten niet als los van mekaar gezien worden, benadrukt ze. Inmiddels heeft ze een belangrijke stap gezet richting een bijenkorf die aansluit bij de behoeften van haar bewoners.

The complex bee ecosystem and its influence on others has been underlined by science, such as the threats caused by the urban pollution. “Intelligent Guerilla Beehive” is a beehive designed to allow bee colonies to survive in particularly compromised urban environments. It is a sensitive device that reacts to possible environmental pollution and contributes internally to the preservation of bee health.

AnneMarie Maes is a renowned Belgian artist, particularly involved in art/science projects, often participating in fruitful collaborations between scientists and artists, but also with more unusual co-creators such as bees, bacteria, and algae. AnneMarie welcomed us in her Brussels home and showed us her marvelous urban garden, a beacon of lush biodiversity in the middle of the city. We talked about her experience with cultural institutions and the general public in relation to environmentalism and her daring hybridization of techniques, her groundbreaking work with communities (human and non-human ones), and the effectiveness of art as a teaching tool. ___ interview by Valentina Bianchi

Al te vaak leeft de idee dat kunst en wetenschap elkaars tegengestelde zijn, dat ze elkaar uitsluiten, maar steeds meer groeit de overtuiging dat de creativiteit en de originaliteit van beide met elkaar verwant zijn. Ook neemt het aantal kunstenaars toe dat wetenschap als uitgangspunt neemt voor de meest uiteenlopende artistieke experimenten: ze maken sculpturen uit lichaamscellen, componeren muziek aan de hand van hersengolven ofontwerpen robotica en informatiesystemen. Voor het publiek is het even wennen.

Summer and autumn 2011 we were visited by several television crews, due to the participation in the Open Gardens city circuit organized by the bibliothèque René Péchère. Several News or Garden programs covered our intensive edible rooftopgarden in a short documentary. TV Brussel were the first to film, on september 25th 2011. A day later, the crew from Jardins et Loisirs / RTBF followed. The young guys from Ushuaia TV experimented in the rooftop with their Canon 7D cameras and travel stuff, for the program Garden party, on november 22nd 2011.
