Play with Squares is a floor sculpture composed of organically created textiles. They are arranged on a low wooden plinth, and their warm colours are derived from grasses, herbs, vegetables and fruits I grow in my rooftop garden/open-air laboratory. I use organic debris and natural additives to make these colourfield paintings, which evoke to a tranquil, almost meditative contemplation.
The tactile granular texture of the surfaces overlays a biomaterial base that reacts in response to environmental parameters as humidity and temperature, which is making these skins alive. They are subject to slow transformations, their morphology is dynamic and can be compared to the topographic change of land surface. As such, we dwell from micro to macro experiences and reflections, and many ‘invisible’ things are becoming visible.

Play with Squares is een vloersculptuur samengesteld uit een reeks organisch gecreëerde doeken. Ze zijn gerangschikt op een lage houten sokkel, en hun warme kleuren zijn verkregen uit de gedroogde resten van grassen, kruiden, groenten en fruit gekweekt in mijn daktuin/open-lucht laboratorium. Ik gebruik organisch afval en natuurlijke toevoegingen om deze colourfield paintings te maken, die oproepen tot een verstilde, bijna meditatieve contemplatie.
De tactiele en korrelige textuur van de oppervlakken bedekt een basis van biomateriaal. Deze reageert op omgevingsparameters als vochtigheid en temperatuur, waardoor deze huiden gaan leven. Ze zijn onderhevig aan langzame transformaties, hun morfologie is dynamisch en kan worden vergeleken met de topografische verandering van landoppervlak. Zo gaan we van micro naar macroervaringen en -reflecties, en worden veel ‘onzichtbare’ dingen zichtbaar.
