The Large Loom / Le Grand Métier is a custom-built, two-by-two-meter sculpture in brushed metal. It is a perfectly functional weaving loom that is set in motion by the artist at key points during the exhibition at La Kunsthalle, thereby creating a visual portrait of the region. Rather than a formal representation, it is an exploration of colors extracted from plants harvested from around the city of Mulhouse and the Alsatian countryside, and from the artists’ laboratory garden in Brussels.
The Large Loom is not a reference to traditional weaving practices. It is a sculpture in its own right, tying the craft of weaving to the world of art. Made of metal rather than wood, it has an industrial look that creates a contrast with the living organisms that inhabit the artist’s work. The weaving is a metaphor for the symbiotic relationships between the local ecosystem’s plants and microorganisms.

The Large Loom / Le Grand Métier est une sculpture de deux mètres sur deux en métal brossé. C’est un métier à tisser parfaitement fonctionnel qui est mis en mouvement par l’artiste à des moments clés de l’exposition à La Kunsthalle, créant ainsi un portrait visuel de la région. Plus qu’une représentation formelle, il s’agit d’une exploration des couleurs extraites de plantes récoltées dans la ville de Mulhouse, dans la campagne alsacienne et dans le jardin laboratoire de l’artiste à Bruxelles.
Le Grand Métier n’est pas une référence aux pratiques traditionnelles du tissage. Il s’agit d’une sculpture à part entière, qui lie l’artisanat du tissage au monde de l’art. Réalisé en métal plutôt qu’en bois, il dégage un aspect industriel qui crée un contraste avec les organismes vivants qui habitent le travail de l’artiste. Le tissage est une métaphore des relations symbiotiques entre les plantes et les micro-organismes de l’écosystème local.
